Under the Hood is an editorial magazine created for a Vancouver-focused car lifestyle enthusiasts. This magazine aims to be authentic, and visually compelling that captures the city’s diverse automotive culture. The design solution combines bold expression and colour with structured layouts to balance the raw energy of modified cars. Influenced by retro automotive and motorsport magazines, the style enhances impact through strong grids, high-contrast imagery, and dynamic cropping. Targeted to car enthusiasts and local readers, the magazine can be seen in print and
digital formats, spotlighting Vancouver’s cars, community, and culture.


The masthead was created using the idea of movement and dynamics that are related to cars in general. This masthead was created using the base typeface of Rush Driver that was later modified and altered to fit with the brand and the aesthetic of the magazine.
Throughout this magazine, a consistent layout and design has been applied. Using high quality images of modified and luxury cars that have been spotted in Vancouver, in both car meets and exhibitions.
In the spreads, a consistent use of big, close up angles and interesting car photography and text has been thoughtfully done to ensure the pages remain dynamic and interesting to read and browse.
